Ethnicity can be an important part of dating, and some members have told us that they don’t always feel seen. That’s why we’ve introduced ethnicity preferences—to help you connect with people who have a similar ethnicity or culture. Right now, this feature is only available in the USA and Canada.
Setting your ethnicity preferences is completely optional. If you don’t add any, you’ll continue seeing everyone as usual. If you do, we’ll try to show you those people first. You can choose to see as many ethnicities as you'd like, and depending on your filters and location, you might still see people outside your preferences too.
How do I select my ethnicity preferences?
- Go to the People tab in the app
- Tap the filter icon in the top right
- Under ‘Basic filters’, scroll to ‘What’s their ethnicity?’
- Tap ‘Select preferences’ (if you haven’t added your own ethnicity, you’ll need to do that first)
- Choose who you’d most like to see
You’ll need to add your own ethnicity before you can select your ethnicity preferences. This is so we can understand you better, and make sure that everyone selects their ethnicity preferences with genuine intentions. Your ethnicity won’t be shown on your profile unless you choose to share it.
Adding your ethnicity preferences won’t affect who sees your profile. However, if your ethnicity matches someone’s preferences, they may be more likely to see you—even if you’ve hidden it from your profile. If you’re not comfortable with this, you can remove your selected ethnicity at any time.
Our list of preferences is based on trusted sources like the US Census and US Office of Management and Budget (OMB), along with feedback from our community. It may evolve over time as we listen and learn from our community. So if you don’t see your identity listed or have feedback, we’d love to hear from you.
At Bumble, kindness comes first. If you ever feel unsafe or experience identity-based hate, please report it. We’re here to support you, always. Learn more in our Community Guidelines.
